BOWLING.
INGLEWOOD CLUB. OPENING OF THE SEASON. The Inglewood Bowling Club was formally opened for the season yesterday under perfect, weather conditions, and as the green was in splendid order, those present had enjoyable play. There was a large attendance of members of the club, whilst l visitors were present from the New Plymouth, Fltzroy, and (Vaitara clubs. Mr. J. Sutherland, president of the club, extended a hearty welcome to the visitors, after which Mrs. Sutherland threw the jack. The customary match was played between the president’s and vice-president’s teams. Afternoon tea dispensed by the ladies added to the enjoyment, and prior to dispersing Messrs. A. K. Smart (New Plymouth), L. H. Sampson (Waitara), and E. Dingle (Fltzroy) returned thanks on behalf of the visitors. During the afternoon the president presented Mr. A. Bungay with the gold medal for winning the singles championship last year, Mr. Bungay having put up a very meritorious performance in playing twelve games and winning them all. The match between the president’s and vice-president’s teams was won by the latter by 95 to 93. In the following details the president’s’ team Is mentioned first :•—• Buckle, Stewart, F. Farquhar, Perkins, Winter, Simcock (s) 24. PLAY AT STRATFORD. OPENING OF BOTH CLUBS. The bowling season in Stratford commenced yesterday, when the and Avon greens were officially thrown open to play. The weather was perfect for the occasion, and there was a large attendance at each green, many visiting bowlers and ladies being present from clubs throughout Taranaki. At the Stratford green, the president (Mr. Geo. Smart) performed the opening ceremony. Mrs. Smart threw the jack, which was followed by a bowl from Mr. Geo. Curtis, the oldest bowler of the club. The president of the Taranaki Centre (Mr. .T. D. Sole) replied to the welcome extended by Mr. Smart. The Stratford Band was in attendance, and rendered a programme of music. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies, and a very pleasant afternoon’s howling followed. The green was In good order, although a trifle heavy after the recent rains. Mrs. Masters threw the jack, and Mr. H. Fookes replied to the warm welcome to the visiting bowlers extended by the president. The singles championship medal won last year was presented to Mr. H. C. North by Mr. Masters. The official opening of the bowling green took place on Saturday last, when thtere was a good attendance of players from Rahotu, Opunake, Auroa and Manaia clubs.. Mr. R. Lambie, president, welcomed the visitors, and Miss M. Lambie having thrown the jack, the usual game, president v. vice-president, was played. The scores were: President 89, vicepresident 79.
