DISTRICT NEWS.

WAI-TOI-TOI—URENUI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The-smoke concert held under-the auspices of the Urenui Club, held In the hall ou Wednesday evening last, was in every way a pronounced success, and the committee are to be complimented Upon the excellent manner in which the arrangements were carried out. There was a large and representative attendance of visitors from New Plymouth and other districts, including officials of the Taranaki Rugby Union, members of the Referees’ Association, and other clubs, and the local body should feel honored that there was such a hearty responce to their efforts to hold a successful closing ceremony to their first season’s operations. The catering was in the hands of Mr. W. HoWell, of Ngatlawa House,, who provided a most substantial spread. • The gathering was ably presided over by Mr. A. H. Halcombe, who before proposing the toast of "The King,” read apologies from Messrs C. Brown, Moyes, Garcia and Papps for being unable to attend. The toast was vnost enthusiastically honored, and after singing the National Anthem the following toast list was successfully gone through:—"The Army and Navy,” proposed by Mr. Farrington and responded to by Mr. G. E. Jago; "The Taranaki representatives,” proposed by Mr. Scrlmegour, and rseponded to by Messrs A. Smith and A. R. Davis;

"The R.5.A.," proposed by Mr. P. Elliot, and responded to by Messrs O. E. Jago and A. Smith; The "Rugby Union,” proposed by Mr. V. C. Tate, and responded to by Mr. J. McLeod ; "Referees’ Association.” proposed by Mr. J. S. O’Neill, and responded to by Messrs Hopkins, A. E. Page and A. R. Davis; "Kindred Clubs,” proposed by Mr. A. R. Davis, and responded to by Messrs N. Street and J. McLeod; "The Visitors,” proposed by Mr. A. H. Holcombe and responded to by Mr. McIsaac; 'The Ladies,” proposed by Mr. A. R. Davis, and responded to by Messrs A. H. Halcombe and F. Julian. Between the toasts, songs were excellently rendered by Messrs J. S. O’Neill, A. R. Davis. A Smith and F. Julian, as well as a recitation by Mr. G. E. Jago. After singing the National Anthem, an hour or so was spent in general harmony, and a most orderly gathering terminated. Owing to the rough weather on Friday evening last the usual monthly euchre party and dance to have been held in the Pukearuhe schoolroom was posponed until next Friday.

The many friends of Mr. A. Carr, of Wai-toi-tol, will regret to learn that he is at present In New Plymouth, suffering from an injured knee. A most successful kitchen party was held at Mr. J. Rockett’s new residence. Wai-toi-toi, last week, when a very pleasant evening was spent in singing, cards. • dancing, etc. Mrs. Rockett was the recipient of a large number of useful presents, including one from the Urutl Beach Picnic Club, who are indebted to that lady for valuable assistance in regard to their annual ball. The torrential rain on Friday morning last, prevented the mall car from crossing the temporary Mangamahoe bridge, which was under water. Happily this state of affairs will be remedied in a few months, when the new bridge will be completed. During his recent visit to Urenui. Mr. N. Uren, of the State Forest Department, paid a visit to the various plantations In this district. I understand that a good number of settlers have expressed their intention of go--1 ing in extensively for tree planting next «ea- ■ son, and evidently interest is becoming more 1 keen every year in this moat necessary work. I understand that Mr. Stan. Clare, of Wai- 1 tara, who for the past few months has been running pictures', in the Urenui Hall, has kindly offered during the season to show a special picture, the profits from which are to be devoted to the Hall Improvement Fund. The children are now looking forward to a matinee nn /Saturday afternoon, on October 31, when Mr. Clare is giving them the opportunity to witness the famous Charlie Chaplin at reduced prices—a treat which the youngsters in the country do not often get.
