MENACE MENTIONED IN PARLIAMENT. In the House of Representatives recently Mr. W. T. Jennings (Waitomo), asked the Minister for Agriculture, whether he will obtain a report from his inspectors as to the extraordinary increase of wild pigs |n parts of North Taranaki, particularly in the Moki district, w’here one settler accounted for a hundred in a few days? The dajnage caused by these pests in destroying grass-paddocks by rooting is a serious matter to settlers, he said. The Hon. W. Nosworthy (Minister for Agriculture) replied yesterday as follows: “The increase of wild pigs is realised, and the matter has had the attention of the Department for some time, and settler.have been advised to use poison in such a way as to reduce to a minimum the risk to their dogs and to native birds. Tn addition, experiments have been initiate! for the purpose of ascertaining whether still better methods of poisoning, or some other effective means of destroying the animals, can be found.” The members for Waitomo, Stratford, and Bay of Plenty formed a deputation, and placed the position before the Prime Minister, who said he would bring the matter before Cabinet, as he was not aware it was so serious.
