AUCKLAND WOMAN CANDIDATE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The political campaign in Auckland was opened by Miss E. Melville (Independent -Reform candidate for Roskill) to-night. She said she would vote for the present Government on a noconfidence motion. She declared the general call for economy should not be allowed to interfere -with education. The Government should encourage the building of houses by advancing money to home-seekers. She urged, the need for social reforms, -particularly a child welfare department to control the whole life of a child. She received a vote of thanks and confidence. LABOR CANDIDATE FOR RICCARTON. Christchurch, Last Night. Mr. J. A. McCullough, formerly of the Arbitration Court, who is the Labor Party’s candidate for Riecarton, opened his campaign to-night, addressing a large meeting at -Riecarton Town Hall, und receiving a very attentive hearing He announced himself as bitterly opposed to the present Government. He cited as failures of the Government their railway administration, immigration policy, and .policy of raising taxfree loans during the war period, instead of levying additional taxation. He made the general statement that the financial institutions of this country practically dictated the policy of the Government.
