KAPONGA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The weather was rather boisterous last Friday on the occasion of the Kaponga and District Jersey Breeder’s- sale. The sale, as usual, attracted a very large attendance of buyers, and a number of the bought went out of Taranaki. Messrs Newton King Ltd, Kaponga, had made very complete arrangements, and the sale passed off without a hitch. The Children’s Fancy Dress Ball, in aid of the School Piano Fund, organised by Mrs. Rowlands and Mrs. Leo, was held on Friday night, and proved a great success. The fancy dresses worn by the children were very good, and the opening grand march was a very pretty sight. The first prize for senior boys was won by E. Doyle, representing a Spanish Gladiator. The prize for senior girls was won by Kathleen Behl representing “Granny.” Junior boys’ prize was won by Victor Elgar (Spring Chicken) and junior girls by Masie Bennie (“Night.”) Amongst the other fancy dresses were: C. Kehely, “Sailor”; Vera King, “Pierrette.” Quite a number of spectators assembled in town to witness the competitors in the Road Race pass through here. Most of the riders were comparatively fresh, and seemed to be full of fight, but no doubt the last hilly ten miles would tell on them. It is evident that lucerne has come to stay.. The writer, in travelling round, has noticed a number of farmers preparing land for this crop. There is no doubt that lucerne is- going to do away with the necessity for growing other fodder crops to a large extent. Some farmers get four and five cuts a year from’their crops.
