RACING FIXTURES.
October 14—Dunedin J.C., Spring. October 14—Whangarei R.C., Spring. October 14—Masterton R.C., Spring. October 21 and 23—Wellington R.C., Spring, TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) A large, fat gentleman, with a face like a couple of pounds of under-done steak, approached me yesterday, and inquired, “Did you notice that Gloaming arrived back this week.” I acquiesced to his supposition, or proposition, or whateveryoumaycallem I ‘‘Yes,” I said, “My mental capacity was equal to the meat of assimilating the momentous actuality.” My friend shied and took six paces Io the rear before coming back with, “Did you notice the reception the papers gave Gloaming?" I sure did—about four Inches! And. upwards of a column about G. D. Greenwood, the proud owner! Hardly a line about “Dick” Mason, the man who made Gloaming the champion that he is. However, it is a matter for congratulation that Gloaming has arrived home safely, covered with glory, bandages, cotton wool, and various impedimenta. Undoubtedly he is the “daddy” of ’em all (though he will never be a daddy himself), and deesrves all the praise and slobber that is being Yieaped upon him. During ' the past fifty years many great horses have passed through “Dick” Mason’s hands, and it is fitting that “the evening” of bls long and honorable career should be illumined by a crowning success such as that achieved by the horse, of the decade, if not the century. Mason was quickly wise to Gloaming’s capabilities, and credit is due to him for the way in which he has developed and sustained the champion’s racing form. Gloaming lias crossed the Tasman eleven times, it is stated, and expense has not been spared as far as comfortable and safe conveyance is concerned. The writer’s picture gallery contains a snap of Mason’s horses returning from i Sydney some twelve months ago, and while Cupldon (fresh from winning the A.J.C. Derby) and others had to put up with the usual cramped quarters on ship, Gloaming luxuriated in a big, roomy stall. Gloaming was worthy of special distinction, and nobody knew it better than R. J. Mason. The squire of Stonyhurst placed anothtr Dunedin Stakes (renamed McLean Stakes) to his credit on Thursday, when Top Score easily accounted for Ballymena and a fair field. Of the fifteen races for the two-year-old premiership Sir George lias won six, namely with Countermine, Masterpiece, Autumnus, Royal Stag, Winter Wind and Top Score. The latter is a full sister to Winning Hit, the crack three-year-old of last season. C. Emerson, who rode the winner, was also successful on Nones (1913) and Meteorite (1920). Glentruin, who won the Electric Handicap at Dunedin, is an English-bred mare by Sunflower IL, her dam Casteliine, by Cylleno— Cassine, by Xaintrailles—Crowflower, by Rosebery. Glentruin is a very smart sprinter, and last season finished in a place In each of her seven starts, her record reading: Four firsts, one second, and two thirds. Charlie Emerson has been carrying practlcally all before him at southern meetinga.
and registered the hat-trick at Dunedin on Thursday. Up to the present he has ridden about twenty winners this season. The Marton horsemen, “Snowy” Morris and Alan McDonald, follow with eight, and Roy Reed’s tally is seven. Ashley Keed returned from Sydney this week, and should not be long in making his presence fefrt. Stork was unlucky to suffer a head defeat in the Whangarei Cup, but may make amends very shortly. The -winner. Gold Plane, Is a six-year-old mare by Merry Moments—Rhodium, aud apparently has a liking for the Whangarei course, as she won the Farewell Handicap there last year. The Dunedin Guineas, run this afternoon, will only draw a small field, and for a change Sir George Clifford will not be represented. The race originated in 1913, and Sir George’s colors were carried to victory by First Flight in 1914. Long Range won for him in 1918, Royal Stag in 1919, Winter Wind in 1920, and Winning Hit in 1921. It is time somebody else got a look in, anyhow 1 Many Kittle won very easily on the first day. On their running In the Maungatua Handicap it is hard to see what chance Warhaven and Ardour can have with the Winkle—Sunglow gelding. Gloaming, is located at Trentham at present, and is to contest the Champion Plate on the 23rd Inst. Probably the champion was never in better condition than he is at present, and nothing should trouble him on the day. However, it is pleasing to hear that Amythas is moving well in his work at Otaki, and though in need of a few good races, will be on hand to tackle Gloaming on Labor Day. Several Bulls and feilding horses with engagements at Waverley are not likely to make the trip on Labor Day. As In the past, the gathering is likely to be a benefit for Taranaki owners. In Wellington Royal Box is fancied for the N.Z. Cup, and others that are fairly short ar? 'Cupldon, Insurrection, Tressayr, Foo Chow and Royal Star. On paper, Canterbury horses appear to hold a mortgage over the big race—but there’s many a slip ’tween the cup and the tip!
