EUCALYPTUS PEST.

LADYBIRDS PROVIDE REMEDY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Oct. 11. Mr. David Miller, Government entomologist, states that the eucalyptus pest reported as destructive in the Feilding district is not fireblight, as lately stated, but the gum tree scale, which was imported from Australia about 1900 and became very destructive in Canterbury and Otago till it was overcome by a special ladybird. Last season infection became apparent in Taranaki, but fortunately the ladybird appeared there at the same time, and no doubt will get the upper hand. Ladybirds are being collected in the South Island and sent to Taranaki to hasten the process.
