HOMES FOR THE PEOPLE.
BUILDING DURING PAST YEAR. POPULATION COMPARISON. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In the House to-day the Hon. G. J. Anderson, in reply to a question by Mr. G. Mitchell (Wellington South), read a return prepared on information obtained from the Government Statistician showing the number of new houses built in New Zealand during the year ending March 31, 1922, compared with the increase in population. The figures were as follows: Total increase in population from April 17, 19*2], to March 31, 1922, 29,303. Total number of houses built in New Zealand. 5828. Number of houses required for the increase in population, estimated at 71 persons to a five-roomed house, which was the standard adopted by the Board of Health in 1919, four thousand. Excess of houses over number required for the increase in population, 1828. Continuing, the Minister said that from numerous letters he had already received from various parts of the Dominion he was firmly convinced that with the lapsing of the rent restriction legislation an impetus would be given to private venture in the building of houses for the people.
