WIDOWS OF TEACHERS.
LARGER ALLOWANCE SOUGHT. TARANAKI TEACHERS’ VIEWS. Increased, provision for teachers’ widows formed the subject of a circular received from the New Zealand Educational Institute at a meeting of the Taranaki branch of the institute at New Plymouth on Saturday. Mr. W. A. Curtis (president of the branch) wae in the chair. The branch was asked to express its views on this proposal, the circular adding: “There is no hope of getting a larger allowance for widows from the fund as it now stands. Therefore the alternative (before teachers is either to drop the request for a lager allowance or to suggest some means by which it may be secured. The increased contribution is the only suggestion that has been made so far, but others may anse in the course of discussion.” The chairman explained that this was a subject that had been under discussion for some time. The present allowance was £lB per year, ibut it was proposed to increase this amount by onethird. Mr. 0. Johnson suggested that the matter be left in the hands of the executive to report to the next meeting. He had seen the subject mentioned in the columns of the Daily News, but was afraid that some of the teachers had not yet had time to consider the matter fully. It was poinnted out by the chairman that it was essential to deal with the matter at once while Parliament was in session in the hope of the increased allowance sought being obtained before the House rose. Mr. R. L. Mcllroy moved, that the Taranaki branch is prepared to give an increased contribution so that the allowance to widows could be raised.
Mr. A. V. Sims seconded the motion, which was carried.
