Humphrey, Broadway, Stratford. Orders for papers may also be left with him. GENERAL ITEMS. October 6. Supporters of the prohibition movement held a concert and meeting in the Methodist Hall last night. The first portion of the programme was devoted to concert items, songs being given by Misses Laurent and Hopkins, Mr. J. H. Thomson, and a recitation by Mr. P. Birkett. Business connected with the movement was transacted and it was announced that Mr. J. H. Thompson had been appointed organising secretary for the district. A very successful social concert and dance was held in the Town Hall last night by the Catholic community in aid of the Stratford branch of the Hibernian Society. The attendance was large. Vocal items were given by Misses Kiely (Auckland), B. Sheahan and E t O’Sullivan (duet), Messrs. G. T. Walters and P. Aitken. The accompaniments were played by Mrs. Bowler and Miss Moon. The dance music was supplied by Mrs. Bianchi’s orchestra and Messrs. T. O’Sullivan and Clark acted as M.C.’s. “The inarch of the giants,” is the style given to a parade of the tall men of Stratford and district, which will take place on the night of October 14. All men over six feet in height are being invited to parade. KING’S THEATRE. Another strong picture programme is billed for the King’s Theatre, commencing at the matinee to-morrow (Saturday) afternoon. The star feature is a Paramount production, entitled “The Call of the North,” adapted from the novel by Stuart Edward White. Jack Holt is the featured player. It is a virile story of the lure and adventure of the lands north of ’52. In addition to the above, a picture of an unusual nature, “A Trip to Paramount Town,” will be screened. This is a novel film. The whole of the above programme, including also a Charlie Chaplin Comedy, gazette, and educational will be screened at the matinee.
The residents of Stratford and district are notified that Ernest Davies, the London qualified sight-testing optician, visits Stratford every Tuesday, and may be consulted at Mr. Gaffaney’s, Broadway. Hours: 9.30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
