IRISH REBELS.
TERRORISM CONTINUES. AMNESTY NOT ACCEPTED. FLIGHT OF PROTESTANTS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Oct. 7, 12.20 a.m. London, Oct. 0. While Dail Eireann is hammering out the constitution the rebels are intensifying their campaign of killing and robbing, and they are not displaying a definite tendency to accept the offered amnesty. Armed robbers are increasing in Dublin city. They are small individually, but accumulatively they are seriously dislocating the social and business life of the people. Sniping has recurred in Belfast, where a woman shopper was shot dead. Hundreds of Protestants are abandoning their homes in the three exch’Vd Ulster counties and are going to America. Some districts are practically denuded of Protestant inhabitants.
Barton, who signed the treaty and who seceded to the rebels, has been arrested in Dublin. CONSTITUTION DEBATE. PARTICIPATION IN WAR. Received Oct. 6, 10.40 p.m. London, Oct. 5. Dail Eireann discussed an article in the constitution providing for the assent of Parliament to Ireland’s participation in any war except in the event of actual invasion. Mr. Darrel Figgis moved an amendment providing that the decision should be by a referendum of the people. Mr. Johnston said some nations in the British Commonwealth were very Imperialistic, New Zealand for instance. He warned the Dail against being driven into war by the interests of overseas capitalists under a humanitarian plea. The amendment was lost by 42 votes to 19. DEMAND FOR PEACE. LOSS TO BUSINESS MEN. Received Oct. 6, 7.30 p.m. London, Oct. 5. A meeting of Dublin business men and ratepayers passed a resolution advocating a conference to consider the situation, the conference to consist of six pro-treatyites, six anti-treatyites, representatives of Trinity College and the National University, with six ratepayers. The proposer said that without peace they would be paupers in six months.
