SCENE AT CHANAK.
TURKS’ LOST CHANCE. THIN KHAKI LINE. RAPIDLY REINFORCED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Oct. 6, 12.55 a.m. London, Oct. 4. The correspondent (Mr. M. Donohoe), telegraphing from Chanak, says the last time he landed at Chanak was during the Balkan War, and the only difference now was that a British garrison replaced the Turks. When the Kemalists arrived a fortnight ago, flushed with victory, a very thin khaki line held the position. Kemal might have broken through, but he waited too long. Now we can enap our fingers at the Turks. Colonel Shuttleworth worked unceasingly upon the defences and reinforcements came, while now there are two divisions at Chanak under General Mari den, including the Sherwood Foresters, t]jje Sussex Regiment, the Scottish Borderers. the Gordon Highlanders, and the Highland Light Infantry. The British temper was sorely tried during the Kemalist incursion, but the order was that the Kemalists must fire the first shot. To-day they seem to be retiring. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
