AJ.C. THIRD DAY. GLOAMING WINS CRAVEN PLATE. BEAUFORD FOUR LENGTHS AWAY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Oct. 4, 8.40 p.m. Sydney, Oct. 4. Upwards of forty thousand attended the Randwick races to-day. The weather was fine and the going good. The third day is regarded as ladies’ day, and it was well patronised by them in gorgeous spring frocks. Gloaming secured a convincing defeat over Beauford and was acclaimed with enthusiasm on all sides. Both horses disputed favoritism going to the barrier, which was a tribute to Gloaming’s unparalleled effort on Saturday, when he was narrowly denied victory after the magnificent way in which he overhauled his opponent. Young steered his steed to position from the jump and always held Beauford in check, and when the time ‘arrived for the final spurt the New Zealander went away from his rival as if the latter were a second rater. The victory was popular and was greatly applauded. The team sails for New Zealand on Saturday. Results : SECOND HURDLE RACE.—Gindi 10.4 1, Ecarte 10.7 2, Neeular 9.2 3. A close race throughout. Gindi and Ecarte fought out a desperate finish and Gindi won by a long head. Time, 4min. 29%sec. CRAVEN PLATE. One mile and a quarter. GLOAMING, 9.1 • 1 BEAUFORD, 9.1 2 VIOLONCELLO, 9.4 2 Other starters were: Kenepil, Prince Charles, Furious. It was generally considered the contest would again be between the riders rather than between Gloaming and Beauford. Gloaming took the lead early, with Violoncello handy. Beauford went to the front at the mile post, with Gloaming hanging on to his heels, apparently detenmined that no gap would have to be filled in the final run'home. The positions were unaltered till entering the straight, when both were on level terms. The crowd looked for another ding-dong struggle to the post, but Gloaming upset calculations, going on from the half distance to win easily by four lengths. Time, 2min. 4sec. SUBURBAN HANDICAP. —Peroration 7.3 1, Gilray 10.12 2, Fair Rosaleen 7.5 3. Entering the straight Peroration had a comfortable lead, successfully stalled off a gallant effort by Gilray, and won by a long neck. Time, Imin. 38sec. MEMBERS’ HANDICAP—HadIey 8.3 1, Comptroller 7.10 2, Kerryland 7.9 3. Thirteen starters. Dighton led round the bend, being joined by his stable mate Comptroller at the distance. Hadley dashed to the front at the post and won by three-quarters of a length. Time, 2min. 7%sec. GIMCRACK STAKES.—Princess Dighton 1, Glaciarium 2, Dalaguli 3. Thirteen starters. Sydney, October 4. At the thoroughbred sales, Kelowi realised 530 guineas. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.’*) Mr. Bruce Joll went through to Hastings i on Tuesday to see Cold Steel run at the ! Hawke’s Bay meeting. The Hawera sport gave the horse a royal chance of winning a race yesterday. The Pakuranga Hunt meeting promises to I draw big fields on Saturday. Thirty have ; been accepted for in the Sylvia Park Handicap; j 25 in the Hunters’ Hurdles; 20 in the Hunt i Cup Steeples, Auckland Handicap, and l Ladies’ Bracelet; 19 in the Jellicoe Handicap; j 16 in the Chatham Handicap; and 11 in the • Maiden Steeples. One wonders where all the jockeys will be procured! 1 Income and Royal Abbey appear to be most favored in the Jellicoe Handicap, and no risks 1 are being taken with the pair whan mentioned
the same breath as Pavo, Irapuka, King Abbey, Lucius, and Fingoland. On the face of it, both “legs” of the double look ‘‘harder” than the odds suggest. In connection with the Craven Plate, run at Randwick yesterday, Gloaming won the race in 1919, the time registeerd being 2.5%, while last year Beauford won in 2.3%, creating new figures for a mile and a quarter. Gloaming’s time yesterday was 2.4. According to an Auckland writer, the Inconis Tax Department made a new departure at the Avondale meeting, which gave rise to some comment. Previously the department had been content to accept the statement of receipts furnished by racing clubs, but on Saturday two of the department’s officers checked the admission roll and counted the “gate” receipts. What next? Ardour, who won a race in fine style at Geraldine, is a nice three-year-old filly by Gay Lad—Mettle, by Calibre—Walda, by Perk’n Warbeck ll—Chiara, by Cuirassier. Ardour is half-sister to Dutch Courage (by Nassau), and promises to do well this season. Another of the Gay Lad breed, Kaotane, won the Trial Hack Handicap at Greenmeadows the other day. Kaotane’s dam, Dabchiek, was bred by Mr. 5. Grigg, who also bred Mettle (the dam of Ardour). Razzle Dazzle (Kllbroney—Simper) proved the best of the two-year-olds produced at Greenmeadows, and only returned a little over “evens” when she won the Prince of Wales Stakes. Muria, the runner-up, is a chestnut filly by Absurd, out of Marsuma, and was bred by Mr. R. H. Nolan. Marsuma’s previous foals were Lady Marsuma, Guinea Gold, and Savory (all by Husbandman), and Myrtle Grove (by Guianforte). Simonette, who ran third, is a black filly by King Soult from Meremere. The other runners were Misgovern (King Mark—Parula), a half-sister to Mlltiades, Marula, Gate Pah and Misrule; Mountain Belle (Mountain Knight—Tinkler) ; Town Talk (Polydamon—Edna May II), a half-sister to Chaplin; and Strong Holt (Polydamon—Jiu Jitsu). A feature of the race was that while it was open to colts, geldings and fillies, all the runners were of the gentler sex. Favoritism for the New Zealand Cup is, to a certain extent, a matter of environment, but most charts appear to quote Cupidou, Royal Box, Scion and Equitable at the shortest prices. Royal Star, Insurrection, Trespass, Foo Chow and Tressayr stand at a few points longer, after which follow Marqueteur, Income, Admiral Codrington and Tenterfield. With the exception of Equitable, and possibly Omahu and Muraahl, none of the' light-weights—that is, below 7 st.—appear to have been backed at all. Although the weights for the Wellington spring meeting have not yet been published, there are philanthropic persons quoting short odds about the chances of Vespucci and liali-a-dozen others in the Wellington Handicap, coupled with Rational, Solfanello, Epitaph, and Winning Hit in the Shorts Handicap. Picking doubles at long range may suit clairvoyants, dreamers and suchlike, but few punters are foolish enough (one hopes) to take the odds about anything until the handicapper has spoken. A correspondent wants to know if the scales used by racing clubs are tested? The writer hopes so, but cannot say that the practice is generally adopted, though Government inspectors are always busy with the Chink who reckons that 13 or 14 ounces make a pound. Onb thing “Moturoa” does know, and that Is that quite recently a racing club lost its scales in a queer way. Th® scales, which bad done service in the club’s weighing-room for many years, were “borrowed’’ by a club member > and used in the course of the member’s ordinary business. Along came an inspector, and not only were the scales found to be ’naccurate and the user -fined, but the whole outfit was confiscated by the Government! If any sport knows of a better one than the above, let him trot it out 1
The New Zealander, Dick, was a runner in the Hurdles at Hawkesbury on September *l3, but shaped poorly. Dick was ridden by Stan. Reid, but was not mentioned in the betting. At the same meeting, Rivoli, who subsequently won the A.J.C. Derby, could only finish a poor second to Cliffdale in the Guineas, while Speciality (the Metropolitan Handicap winner) ran fifth in the Spring Handicap (a mile and three furlongs). Such is form!
