GENERAL ELECTIONS.
THE TIMARU SEAT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Timaru, Last Night. Mr. F. J. Rolleston, Mayor of Timaru, and also chairman of the Harbor Board, acceded to a request from a large and influential deputation to contest the Timaru seat in the Reform interests. Already several candidates for the Timaru seat are mentioned provisionally, including Sir Joseph Ward, Mr, F. J. Rolleston (Mayor of Timaru), and Mr. G. E. Chiles, a member of the Borough Council. It is generally thought that if there is a three-cornered election with three new men the result will be very open, the block votes deciding the issue. It may be mentioned that the Civil Service, which is strong in Timaru, will vote solidly against the Reform candidate, whoever he may be.—Press.
RATANA’S POSITION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, October 2. The suggestion that Ratana is actively concerning bimsclf in the Native election campaign was refuted by a member of hie staff in Wellington. At a large meeting of Natives last April, Ratana was asked to accept nomination or to nominate a candidate.
