Mr. Thos. Hugo, Inspector of Fire Brigades, will visit New Plymouth tomorrow on his annual inspection of the New Plymouth Brigade. Mr. P. O. Veale has been selected as the Auckland candidate for the Rhodes Scholarship. He is at present a master at the Boys’ Grammar School.—Press Association.

w A complimentary banquet was given at Levin last night *to Mr. W. H. Field, M.P. for Otaki, from which electorate the borough of Levin has been excluded. The Prime Minister was present. Many tributes were pai dto Mr. Field’s services.—Press Association.

Mr. Edmund Godward, assistant general manager of the Bank of Australasia, London, is visiting Taranaki. Mr. Godward is making a flying visit to all branches of the bank in New Zealand, having already visited the Australian branches.

The Rev. G. C. Cruickshank, vicar of Whangarei. has been offered charge of Nelson Cathedral, but -has declined. The .position has fallen vacant owing to the fact that Dean Weeks is going to Australia. The ground for Mr. Cruickshank’s refusal is that there is still work for him to do in Whangarei. In the ordinary course of events, the Vicar of Nelson would become the Dean of Nelson. Mrs. Mary Ann Purser, -who died at Blenheim a few days ago, was born in Herefordshire, England, and came to New Zealand with her husband and family of five, settling first in Nelson and later removing to Blenheim, where they lived for about 21 years. Mr. Purser, senr., came to Wanganui in 1899, and joined his son in the well-known funishing business of Purser and Son. The deceased, who was predeceased by her husband five years ago, leaves a family of six sons and four daughters, including Messrs. M. F. and E. C. J. Purser, of Hawera.

Mr. J. R. Crocker, at present postmaster at Ashburton, will retire voluntarily at the end of November, after 40 years’ service. Mr. Crocker joined the department at Patea in ISB3, and was stationed at various towns in the North Island, including Hawera, Napier, Thames, and Wellington. His first appointment as postmaster was at Waiau, and later he held that position at Queenstown, Mataura, and Pahiatua. Fol- some years he was inspector for the Canterbury and West Coast districts, and from‘that took charge of the Ashburton post office about a year ago.
