THE LIVING WAGE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. 'Sydney, Sept. 29. The Board of Trade has declared, the living -wage of a male adult as £3 18s weekly, the same as previously fixed. THE COMMONWEALTH LINE. Melbourne, Sept. 29. In the House of Representatives Mr. Hughes gave notice of a Bill to place the Commonwealth Shipping Line under independent control. ATTEMPTED BRIBERY. Brisbane, Sept. 29. Sleeman and Connolly were found guilty of attempted bribery with a strong recommendation to mercy on the grounds of great encouragement and the fact that a bait was held out to them as a trap. Sleeman and Conolly were each sentenced to three months’ imprisonment without hard labor and fined £5OO, in default nine months’ imprisonment. SWISS TENDER REFUSED. Melbourne, Sept. 29. The Melbourne City Council rejected a tender -for Swiss electricity meters at £1 7s 8d on the grounds that they feared they might be of German manufacture. A local tender at £1 13s 4d was accepted. Sydney, Sept. 29. The conference of the southern colliery proprietors and the miners on the deficiency question proved abortive. It is now certain the men will cease work at the expiry of the fourteen days’ notice already tendered.
