SUBMERGED CARGO.
WILTSHIRE AFTERMATH. Diving operations were commenced at the Great Barrier Island last week to endeavor to recover the submerged cargo of the wrecked Wiltshire. Preliminary investigations have been in progress for some time, but unfavorable weather has hindered the activities of the divers, several of whom have been engaged from Auckland to carry out the work. A quantity of the necessary gear has been assembled on the spot and preparations for the renewed work of salvage have been pushed forward when any spell of fine weather has afforded the opportunity. A large launch and two lifeboats are employed to carry the men and equipment from Tryphena to the scene of the wreck. Only a small portion of the wrecked ves- ! sei’s forepart remains on the rocks, the rei mainder having been loosened by heavy seas and become submerged. The fresa easterly wind which sprang up during the middle of last week struck full on the coast where the Wiltshire lies, and consequently the operations which were commenced will perforce have to cease pending a change in the direction of the wind. Confident hopes are entertained of salvaging the most valuable portion of the cargo, if not the whole of it, when the approach of summer brings longer periods of unbroken fine weather.
