IMPROVING ENGLISH WOOL.
PERUVIAN RAMS SUGGESTED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Sept. 27. Addressing Northumberland sheepbreeders. Professor Barker, textile expert at Leeds University, suggested the importation of Peruvian merino rams into th* north-east of England, with a view to th* improvement of English wool. He thought it possible to rear merinoi even on the bleak moorland of Northumberland, not Australian merinos, which could not be acclimatised in Britain, but Peruvians, which grew the finest merino wool 14,000 feet above the sea level. H* suggested that Peruvian rams should b* experimentally crossed with Cheviot blackfaced ewes. The Board of Agriculture has approved the scheme. Professor Barker has asked eight or nine Northumberland breeders to give Peruvians a trial.
