ENGINEERS RESIST LONGER HOURS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright Received Sept. 27, 9.10 p.m, Melbourne, Sept. 28. It is feared that Victoria is on the eve of a big engineering strike, the men stating they are determined to resist an extension of hours from 44 to 48 weekly. A conference is being held at the Trades Hall to-morrow to discus* what action is to be taken.
COCKATOO ISLAND TROUBLE Received Sept. 28, 10.20 p.m. / Sydney, Sept. 28. A conference held between the Shipping Tribunal, the Federated Society of Boilermakers and the management of Cockatoo Island discussed the dismissal of the boilermakers who refused to work riveting machines, and asked the tribunal to give a decision as to whether the management had violated the shipbuilding agreement between the Federal Government and the boilermakers by dismissing a number of men from new work owing to a difference over repair, work and the use of pneumatic tools. The tribunal upheld the management, stating that the latter had acted within its province in dismissing the men. The men will discuss the question of resumption at a meeting on Tuesday.
