EXTENSION OF TRAMS.
A SERVICE FOR WESTOWN. LOAN PROPOSAL CARRIED. SMALL OPPOSITION. payers yesterday for authority to row £19,000 for the purpose of extend* ing the tramway system to Westawn was carried iby a majority of 917, out of the 1134 votes cast. The proposal was supported by 1022 and opposed by 105. The total votes recorded was the largest for some years on matters where only ratepayers have a vote. The highest number of votes were cast at Whiteley Sunday School, the principal booth, a total of 229 votes being recorded, of which 211 were for and 18 against the proposal. Standish Hill was next with 204 and 8 respectively. Vogeltown voted well for the proposal with 88 for and 17 against. At Westown there were 52 for and 15 against. Throughout the day there was no great rush on the booths, the greater number of the votes being cast between 6 and 7 in the evening, during which hours all the booths reported an increased influx of voters. The returns came promptly to hand, and at about a quarter past seven the returning officer (Mr. R. Day) was able to announce the result.
