BOXING.

NEW ZEALANDERS IN AUSTRALIA. ACQUIT THEMSELVES WELL. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Hobart, Sept. 26. The opening session of the Australasian Amateur Boxing Championships provided fine sport. The New Zealanders acquitted themselves creditably, winning all their fights. McDonald was too strong for Thompson, using both hands with great effect. Thompson was sent to the boards on many occa* sions. but showed wonderful pluck and was warmly cheered. Purdy boxed cleanly and had no difficulty In out-pointing the less experienced Muir. Hansen and Williams provided the best bout of the session. There was little between them. They were warmly applauded. Meale knocked out Brennan with an uppercut to the point. Brancourt and Muller provided an amusing bout. The fonmer was too tall for his opponent, who had to be content with body blows. Results:— Lightweight.—McDonald beat S. J. Thompson (Queensland) on points. Bantam-weight.—A. .T. Peet (Victoria) defeated R. H. Wood (Tasmania) on points; V. Nolan (Queensland) beat G. P. Boyton (New South Wales) on points. Feather-weight.—B. Ristuccta (Victoria) beat C. Hopner (N.S.W.) on points; Purdy beat R. Muir (Queensland) on points. Welter-weight.—Hansen beat E. T. Williams (N.S.W.) on points; G. Neilson (Queensland) knocked out W. Henderson (Victoria) in the fourth round. Middle-weight.—W. Smith (Queensland) outpointed W. E. Carruthers (Victoria) ; Meale knocked out J. Brennan (N.S.W.) in the first round. Heavy-weight.—M. Killeen (Victoria) beat W. Fisher (Tasmania). The towel was thrown in at the end of the second round. J. Brancourt (N.S.W.) outpointed G. Muller (Queensland). CARPENTIER’S DEFEAT. ANOTHER FIGHT WANTED. Paris, Sept. 25. Carpentier’s defeat is agitating the whole of France. Siki interviewed declared: “I never showed my best powers. I am going to meet Dempsey either in France or America. Carpentier, who always proclaimed his gentlemanliness and sportsmanship showed neither.” The Petit Parisien refuses to accept Carpentier’s defeat as final and demands a new fight. Most of the other papers refuse to seek excuses, declaring that Carpentier was irresistibly beaten. Paradoxically Carpentier received 200,000 francs and Siki 60,000 francs. Carpentier has recovered sufficiently to announce that he 13 not satisfied with the verdict and wants a return match. He declares that the referee's decision was correct. Siki' placed his foot behind his ankle and then knocked him out as he fell. No doubt, he took Siki too lightly, but Is confident that he could regain the title. Siki has decided to challenge Dempsey. CARPENTIER'S INJURIES. BADLY KNOCKED ABOUT. Received Sept. 26, 5.5 p.m. Paris. September 25. Carpentier presents a pitiable appearance. His nose is shapeless, his two eyes are violet, and he has lumps on his lips, which are enormous and shapeless. A doctor states two bones are fractured in his right hand, and one In the left.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. BOOM FOR NEW CHAMPION. PROMOTERS MAKING OFFERS. Received Sept. 26, 9.45 p.m. New York, Sept. 26. Siki’s victory over Carpentier caused a sensation in boxing circles here, and promoters are vying with each other in cabling offers to the Senegalese to come to the United States. One promoter cabled an offer of twenty thousand dollars, another of a hundred thousand a third of 150 thousand. All wish to match him for a light-heavy bout, especially among colored boxers. Dempsey announces that in view of Carpentier’s defeat his European trip is cancelled. The opinion here is that Siki’s local opponent would be Harry Willis. MOORE BEATS LLOYD. London, Sept. 25. Moore beat Lloyd on points. TARANAKI ASSOCIATION. A special general meeting of members of the Taranaki Boxing Association was convened for last night to discuss the question of holding a tournament in Pukekura Park, and also to discuss the present position of the association. Mr. E. Jackson presided, but as, owing probably to other functions, there were only about 15 present, out of a total membership of 90, it was deemed inadvisable to deal with such important matters with such a small attendance, and it was decided to postpone the meeting to a date to be fixed later. At a meeting of the committee subsequently, it was resolved that the deputation which Is to wait on the sports ground committee endeavor to obtain the use of the ground for holding an open-air tournament on the last available Saturday in November. ELTHAM TOURNEY TO-NIGHT. Great interest has been aroused in the professional contest, A. Greaves (Auckland) v. W. Scott (Taranaki), which is to take place at the Eltham Town Hall this evening. A good fight is predicted, as there is only a pound of difference between the men’s weights and those who have seen them in action say that both are highly-scientific boxers. The amateurs are the best in Taranaki, coming from Hawera, New Plymouth, Stratford and Eltham. It is the last tournament the present committee will be holding, and they have not left a stone unturned to give their many patrons a splendid evening’s entertainment.
