TEPID BATHS.

COST A BARRIER. Tepid baths for New Plymouth formed the subject of an informal talk at a meeting of swimming delegates on Saturday. The Life-saving Society and the New Plymouth Swimming Club, at their annual meetings held earlier in the week, had passed resolutions urging the Borough Council to consider the question of establishing such baths. When the subject was mentioned at Saturday’s meeting Mr. J. Brown said tepid baths were out of the question at present owing to the expense involved. He. had been informed that the expense involved would be £3OOO, and the ratepayers could not be expected to carry a loan proposal for that amount. He thought also that it would eventually mean that tepid baths would have to be built separately, as it was not practicable to make the present baths tepid. It was suggested that the amount needed might be raised by means of debentures. Another speaker suggested that the swimming bodies in the town might help •to raise money by mean's of carnivals, etc. As one speaker said, small tepid baths in the heart of the town, which could be used all the year round, would be quite a good idea and would be revenue-producing, but it appears that the great barrier to the scheme at present is th 3 cost involved.
