RACING , IN AUSTRALIA. By Assn —Copyright. Received Sept. 24, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, September 24. Dick was the only New Zealander at the Hawkesbury meeting, and ran unplaced. TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.”) To-day, Dominion Day, will see the flags again flying at Avondale and Otaki. The principal event at the latter place will be the Avondale Guineas, for which Mr. A. B. Williams' fine Martian gelding. Rapine, will start well fancied. Rapine was a trifle on the jolly side when he ran in the Flying at Marton, but he finished right up in fourth place without being knocked about. ’ His next appearance was in the Wanganui Guineas, in which he was badly handled, and went under to Highland by a bare length. Highland is not engaged to-day, but the stable has a good representative in Lucius. However, the race looks a fair thing for Rapine. Mr. A. B. Williams won the Avondale Guineas last year with Grotesque (Absurd— Bronze), who brought off a surprise victory over Rational and Mermin. Amongst the earlier winners of the race were such great gallopers as Nonette, Wairikl, Santa Rosa. Elysian, Bleriot, Merry Roe, and Vagabond. A TaranAki horse, Esthonia, won in 1919. Handicaps due this week are as follow: September 25—Geraldine, Oamaru, Kurow; September 26—Pakuranga Hunt; September 27 —Whangarei; September 29 —Masterton ; September 30—Dunedin. Molyneaux, who won the Avondale Cup and Plumpton Handicap last year, is at present doing well in 'Stralia, and Absurdum and Radiant Light, who both won races at the same meeting, are, strangely enough, in 'Stralia also. The New Zealand jockey, W. Mancer, struck trouble at Menangle (Australia) recently. He rode Tommy Rot in the Flying Welter, and the stewards rubbed him out for two years for deliberate interference with another runner in the race. The ex-New Zealand horseman H. Gray had an excitnig experience in fcngland at the recent Lewes meeting on a horse named Troika, on which he won the Welter Handicap. Writing of the occurrence an English writer says:—"Troika is not an ideal mount by any means, and in the Welter Handicap he made his eleventh appearance of the season. No fewer than six jockeys have been unsuccessful on him, but the Australian rider. Gray, managed to coax him into doing his best, and he won after a good race with the outsider. Fiddieback, and Heather Cross. Troika made every yard of the running and won by half a length. He used to be under the care of Tabor, but the son of Torloisk had so repeatedly disappointed the Epsom trainer that he sold him to Mr. F. J. Benson. Hector Gray had an exciting experience, as he could not stop the horse after passing the post, and as a result Troika jumped the rails and a fence before pulling up.”
