NEARLY 11,000 ENLISTMENTS. MESSAGE FROM ARAWA TRIBE. COOK ISLANDS OFFER CONTINGENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Up to midnight yesterday, 10,715 recruits had registered throughout the Dominion. The totals for the respective coin* mands are: Northern—lB6 officers, 2241 other rank.?. Central—24B officers, 3990 other ranks, and 45 nurses. Southern—23l officers, 3555 other ranks, and 25 nurses. 1 In addition to the above, 167 nurses have registered with the matron-in-ehjef at Wellington, besides 24 officers, and threa other ranks with the staff officer for the air service. The Prime Minister has received a message from the Arawa tribe, the translation of which is: “I will not stay; I will go. Be brave, O father! God will give you light.” The Prime Minister also received the following radio from the Resident Commissioner at Rarotonga: “The Cook Islands offer to assist the Empire with a contingent for Turkey.” TARANAKI MEN OFFER. RUSH SLACKENS OFF, The reassuring news of the last two days has had its effect in a slackening off of the rush of volunteers for service. Only about 20 names were handed in at the Defence Office at New Plymouth yesterday, but the total naw reaches the high figure of 564. To thia must be added the names from Waitara and Opunake, which were being collected by representatives of the Defence Department yesterday, and it ia almost certain that the figures will reach 600. Headquarters in Wellington are probably awaiting further news of the situation, as nothing further has yet been communicated to the local authorities.
