FIREBLIGHT MENACE.
MEASURES TO CONTROL IT. STRENGTHENING THE ACT. By Telegraph —Press Assn.—Copyright. Wellington, Last Night. Tn the House to-night, the Hon. W. Nosworthy moved the second reading of the Fireblight Bill, which he said was intended to extend thu powers given in the Orchard Pests Act of 1908. It proposed to create commercial fruit-grow-ing districts, in which hawthorn may be destroyed if fireblight is found to exist. Mr. H. Atmore (Nelson), who claimed to represent the largest fruit-growing area in New Zealand, said the experts connected with the Cawthorn Institute approved of the Bill, and expressed the hope it would pass this session. Mr. J. A. Young (Waikato) said the ■Bill was unobjectionable to him so long as districts which were mainly dairy districts were not brought under the Act. He thought that before any district was proclaimed a commercial fruit district the local bodies should be notified, so that they might lodge objections. The second reading was agreed to.
