A Dunedin message reports the death of Mr. John Wain, aged 86, the proprietor of the hotel bearing his name. Mr. M. Hawkins, inspector of prisons, arrived in New Plymouth by the mail train last night. He will be here two or three days on departmental business.
The Rev. S. S. Osborne, and Mr. A. H. Osborne, of New Plymouth, are at present in -Auckland.
A vote of condolence was accorded to Mr. E. Whittle (patron of the New Plymouth Cricket Club) in his recent bereavement at last night’s annual meeting of the club, members standing in silence.
Mr. Robert Campbell died at his residence, “Willowbank,” Waverley, after a lengthy illness. Deceased was formerly well-known in the Wairarapa district as a farmer at Upper Otaki. He later took up a farm at Waverley, retiring several years ago. The Captain Roberts referred to in the cables as having invented a microphone giving perfect articulation on the telephone over great distances was formerly electrical engineer to the Patea Borough Council. He was in charge of the detection of submarines during the war, and has succeeded in directing dirigibles by sound and light. Mr. M. Fraser, chairman of the Taranaki Hospital Board, who has been indisposed for some time, is now much improved in health. At the meeting of the board yesterday the secretary reported that Mr. Fraser hoped to resume his duties next week, and wished to express thanks to the board for their expressions of sympathy and hopes for his recovery.
Reporting to yesterday’s meeting of the Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, the acting-matron of the New Plymouth Hospital (Sister R. I. Barnitt) stated that Nurses Field and Dew were at present on leave, while Nurses Mackenzie, Sangster and Corkill w ( ere off duty for a few days during the past month owing to illness. Nurse R. Thomson, having completed her term of probation, had been put on the permanent staff,- while Miss Esma Colby commenced duty on August 22 on probation. The following names were added to the’waiting list for appointment as probationers under the x Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board at yesterday’s meeting of the board: Misses C. D. Bradford, E. M. Perrott and M. Evans. Nurse L. Fraser, district nurse at Uruti, forwarded her resignation to yesterday’s meeting of the Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Nurse E. C. Evans also forwarded her resignation from the New Plymouth Hospital. Both were accepted.
