COST OF DEFENCE.
WHAT NEW ZEALAND PAYS. WRONG STATEMENT CORRECTED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. In the House this afternoon, Mr. Massey, referring to the cabled statement from the League of Nations that New Zealand increased her defence expenditure by 148 per ent., said this was a mistake. The figure should be 48- per cent, and even this was not correct. He quoted figures showing that the total expenditure for defence in 1912-13 was £126.000 and in 1921-22 the amount was put down at £1.736.000. This, however, included £927.000 “war expenses,” which could not really be accounted as ordinary defence expenses. It arose out of the late war. If, therefore, it was deducted the real position was that our ordinary defence expenditure last year showed a decrease of 33 per cent, compared with 1912-13.
