THE VOLUNTEERS.
BIG RUSH TO ENLIST, 399 AT NEW PLYMOUTH. MAJORITY RETURNED SOLDIERS. Up to last night 390 volunteers had handed in their names to the New Plymouth Defence Office, of whom approximately 200 are returned soldiers. That tjhere will be no lack of volunteers is evident from conversations with other returned soldiers who have not yet decided to hand in their names. They are waiting in the meantime pending developments. Should it be decided that only a small force is required they are willing to stand down in favour of those who just missed the last war to give them a chance to serve the Empire, but should the crisis become acute and a large force become necessary, they say they will go and that there will be no necessity to send for them. Most of these men have set up in business ur are still paying off homes bought under the repatriation scheme, but they still are willing to cast in their lot with the forces should further recruits be required. No further official advice beyond that, published yesterday morning has been received by the Defence Office, and in the meantime they are confining their activities to obtaining as complete records as possible of those who volunteer. To this end all those who volunteered on Monday are requested to hand in to the Defence Office particulars of their date qf birth, service, and as to whether they are married or single.
