The New Plymouth War Memorial Committee intimated to Monday night’s meeting of the Borough Council that it had decided not to proceed with the appeal for funds to erect the memorial until the question of the site had been determined. The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson), said he disagreed with the decision, as it would mean that the matter would probably be delayed for another year. The Harbor Board would probably appoint a valuer at their next meeting ahd the Borough Council would appoint one as soon after that as possible, but their report could not be presented until the following meeting m October, when it would be too late to think of getting any legislation through Parliament during the present session. He thought the appeal for funds should be made, and if sufficient support was forthcoming, it might be worth the borough’s while to spend money on securing a site. The decision of the committee would probably mean a considerable delay in the launching of the appeal.
