MIXED BATHING.

LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY’S SUPPORT) TEPID BATHS WANTED. Mixed bathing at the municipal baths formed the subject of a discussion at last night’s annual meeting of the North Taranaki head centre of the Royal Life-Saving Society. The subject was introduced by Mr. R. Howell, who commented on the fact that there had been a bigger attendance than ever at mixed bathing last season. It was only right that certain hours should be set apart for the ladies, especially those members of the Ladies’ Life-Saving Club who, needed the baths to themselves for instructional purposes. The men, he thought, need have no special hours set apart, and he urged that the Borough Council be asked to set apart as much time as possible to mixed bathing. Miss Mather, who is a member of the ladies* club, said a meeting would be held next Saturday of various representatives to go into the question of forming a time-table for the baths for the coming season. The ladies’ clubs were desirous of having the time between 5.30 to .6.45 a.m. and 5.30 to 6.30 p.m. set apart for ladies. It was suggested that though the first hour mentioned could be suitably arranged for the ladies, the latter hour was likely to interfere with men swimmers.

Mr. P. Mathieson explained that the object of Saturday’s meeting was to enable those interested to get together to talk the matter over.

Mr. Howell was appointed the LifeSaving Society’s delegate to the meeting, and a resolution was passed supporting mixed bathing at the baths as far as possible. Mr. K. Kirk mentioned the matter of tepid baths, which, he said, would be both an asset and revenue-producing. He suggested that the delegate should be backed by a resolution on this matter also. It was resolved that the Borough Council be urged to consider ways. and means of establishing tepid baths at New Plymouth.
