THE TRAMWAYS.

TRAFFIC IMPROVING. THE RETURNS FOR AUGUST. In his report to the Borough Council for the month of August, the tramways manage!' (Mr. R. H, Bartley) stated that whilst the monthly revenue received from this department was £B3 Is Id less than for August, itfZl, the traffic generally showed a decided improvement, and he hoped at the end of this month to be able to show an increase in the revenue as compared with last year’s working. The running of the system was somewhat hindered on two occasions during the month owing to the effect of lightning or heavy static charges breaking down the insulation. The trouble was located as quickly as possible, and temporary measures adopted to carry on the full service. The locating of these troubles and the arranging of temporary measures all take time, which means a holding up of a section of the system, with a consequent loss of revenue. He was altering slightly the arrangement where this trouble occurred, w-ith the hope of preventing it happening again. This work was hardly completed as yet, and the department was still carrying on under the temporal y arrangement satisfactorily. The alteration to the second car was completed early in the month and put into traffic, and the third one was well in hand.

The records for the month’s working are:-r-
