HAWERA VALUATIONS.. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hawera, Sept. 16. The Assessment Court, under Mr._ A. D. Thomson’s presidency, sat at Hawera this week to deal with protests against new valuations. The court sustained unimproved values at figures reaching £l5O to £llO a foot in the main business area. A few adjustments were made, but they did not greatly affect the Government Valuer’s figures, which in the majority of cases were maintained. WHITE ISLAND ACTIVE. Whakatane, Sept. 16. White Island is very active to-day, one large column of steam and two smaller ones going up all the morning. OBJECTION TO HIGH FREIGHTS. Whakatane, Sept. 16. A public meeting called, by the Chamber of Commefee last night djseussed the matter of high freights arged to this port by the Northern Company and considered a proposal made by Captain Berridge for the formation of a local company to run between Auckland and ' Whakatane. The following motion was | passed: “This meeting favors an effort being made to establish shipping con- | nection between the Bay of Plenty and | the South Island.” A committee was set I up to go into all matters connected with : shipping at this port and formulate proposals to lay before a future meeting. THE O’SHAUGHNESSY CASE. London, Sept. 14. Mrs. O'Shaughnessy and Mrs. Imrie, who appeared before the Magistrate in connection with the death of Mrs. Fraider, were remanded for a week. CHARGES OF GAMBLING. Wellington, Sept. 15. As a result of the police raid at Petone and Lower Hutt yesterday, Fritz Dolling. John J. Ridetr, Ernest H. Gardiner, Robert Henry Jones, George Phillips, and Cyril J. Fauchelle were arrested and charged with keeping a common gaming house. They were remanded till September 23. SLY-GROG SELLING. Invercargill, Sept. 15. Amy Barrett was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment for selling liquor on unlicensed premises and her son Francis fined £25 for keeping liquor lor sale. The father stated he had gone to prison once to save his wife .
