DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS. DUNCAN WINS AMATEUR HAM DEFEATS SHAW. By Telegraph.—Press Association.
Palmerston N., Sept. 16.’ Excellent weather prevailed to-day for the finals of the amateur and professional golf championships. The Duncan and Horton match, for the amateur final, was characterised by the steadiness of the former rather than brilliance. Duncan took 77 for the first round. Both drove well to the first, Horton finding the green with a lovely second and holded in 3. Even drives were sent to the second. Duncan was short of the green and the hole was halved in 4. The next was halved in bogey 5. Duncan holed the next in 4, making the position all square, and Horton, overrunning with his approach and short putt, gave him the next also, while Duncan, holing the next in 4, made him 2 up. Horton recovered well from a drive off the fairway, but missed a medium putt, leaving Dunean 3 up. The eigth was halved In 4. and Horton took the next. Duncan found the bunker with his second to the tenth, and Horton’s fourth shot left him In a handy position. Horton took the hole, reducing him io 1 down. Duncan holed the next in 5, and increased his lead to 3 at the twelfth. Hor--1 ton, missing a 3. ft. putt after Duncan had struck a bunker with 'his drive, enabled the latter to halve. At the next Duncan was 4 up. The next three holes also fell to him. Horton also failed with a wild drive on the I home stretch, making Duncan 8 up. In the afternoon the nineteenth and twentieth | went to Duncan. Horton took the next in II 2, winning the twenty-second with a 5 ft. putt. The twenty-third went to Duncan in 4, and he was 9 up. At the twenty-fourth both drove well, and after exciting green play the hole was halved. It was now evident that Horton must recover greatly to win, as the score was 9 up and 12. At the twenty-fifth both lay nicely over the drive, and the hole was halved In four. The twenty-sixth was also halved, and the score Xvas 9 up and 10. Dunean’s approach beat Horton, and the latter had one slender chance, a difficult putt, but the ball hovered on the lip and came to rest. Thus Duncan Decame champion for the ninth time by 10 up and 9 to play. In the professional final, the morning ended: Ham 80 and Shaw 84. Ham was playing good golf, excepting his green shots and lofties. Shaw’s long game" was remarkably fine, but his iron shots let him down. Ham led 3 up at the conclusion of the first round. The afternoon saw better golf, and a fight of champions. Shaw, undoubtedly the longest driver at the championships, drove oh to the green, playing at the sixth a length of 442 yards, with a slight wind against him. Ham did a 2, and Shaw’s last chance seemed to disappear. Ham sunk a fine putt, but a freak ball saved the hole, which was halved. The game ended In favor of Ham, 2 up and 1. Shaw’s afternoon round was 76 and Ham's 78. LADIES VERSUS MEN. MATCH ENDS ALL SQUARE. Palmerston N., Last Night.
