TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.”) Concluding day at Wanganui. Manawatu Hunt Steeples on Wednesday. Marton fonm was good to follow on Thursday. Rapine appeared to be badly handled in the Wanganui Guineas.

Uleaborg was unlucky on Thursday, but will win a race vefy soon.

Jack O’Shea rode the winning double, Admiral Codrington and Rational, at Wanganui. On Thespian’s form on Thursday, Winning Hit should account for him in the Eclipse Stakes.

Rational never looked like getting beaten in the Flying, and paid a wonderfully good "price.”

Mark Time was the only favorite to arrive first at Wanganui, and to make matters worse he was %lb. "light.”

Mil! o’ Cowrie ran well in the Okehu Hurdles. and will have a lot more friends if saddled tin for the shorter race to-day.

Rang! Thompson was taking no risks with Projector in the Hack Steeples. After jumping one fence the Bulls horse was pulled up.

Wake Up looked like coming In on her own in the Durie Hack Handicap, but Cochineal wore her down at. the finish. Wake Up is Improving fast, and should be worth following. Haurangi tried to repeat his end-to-end Marton victory in the Spring Handicap at Wanganui, but Admiral Codrington (who was benefited by the race he had on Saturday) cut the Feramorz gelding down easily in the run home. The Debutante Two-year-old Stakes, five furlongs, should provide an interesting finish to-day.

All sorts of rumors were current at. Wanganui when Mark Time’s rider failed to draw the weight after the opening event on Thunsriay. but no doubt the official in charge was satisfied as to the correctness of the weiehing apparatus. Mark Time won so easily that the trifling shortage made no difference to him finishing first, and his army of backers wern certain]}’' "very stiff.”

Blush, winner nf the Maiden Race, was not on the majority of the unofficial cards that the writer has seen, and these horses alwavs appear to win. Blush and the favorite. Pillage. had a great set-to in the straight, and Wiggins' horsemanship probably swung the balance in the fonnier’s favour. Vogue had a bad run, and may 'do better next time out. Fred Davis had reason to be pleased with his victory in the Wanganui Guineas. In fact the race has been a lucky one for him. As a jockey ho rode two winners. St. Mark (1899) and Renown (1900). while as a trainer he prepared Bjorneborg (191 G and Estland (191 R On Thursday he capped the lot, when, as an owner-trainer, he supplied the winner tn Highland, a full brother to both Bjorneborg and Estland.

Wrangle is a consistent but unlucky, customer. and twice recently has just failed to land the second "leg” of a heavily-supported "double.” He is in great nick at present, and his followers should double up next "pop.” Cochineal was a long time coming good, but two good wins Inside a week nuts a more rosey look on her career. By All Red—Peroneal. it is little wonder that she can gallop, and the pleasing feature of her recent performances is the improved staying powers she now exhibits.

Otauru Kid’s victory nt Marton was alleged to have been a flukey one. hut this the Camnflre gelding discredited by winning the Okehu Hurdles In fine style. S. Walls always had him with the loading division, and tho Foxton hurdler was golnc stronger than anything else at tjie finish. He will be dangerous again next start.

Kinscm wns made a good favorite in tho Spring Handicap nt Wanganui, but wns never dangerous, and was plainly in l need of a race. Enui table again ran well, but could only finish fourth. He is not one-half the galloper that his dam (Equltas) was.

If Benuford and Gloaming meet again to-day nt Rosehill it will be over a mile. Provided the going is good the Aussie-owned crack should beat the New Zealander by a bigger margin than that separating them in the Chelmsford Stakes last Week.

Concerning Hallowmas, a Sydney writer has the following to say : "Hallowmas, who stayed well, wns possibly unlucky not to have been a Melbourne Cup winner. At the A.J.C. snrin«>- meeting in 1912 he unexpectedly won the Souatters’ Handicap, his starting price being 33 to 1. That win gave him 1 191 b. nenaltv in the Melbourne Cun. and as in addition W. H. Smith declared 11b. over, Hallowmas carried 74. against the 6.7 at which he was originally weighted. He ran well, hut was beaten a length and a half by Piastre.” It. was just shortly after this that the writer saw Hallowmas! at. Bushy Park, and. nt the time, expressed the opinion that Hallowmas wouold have won big money if Mr. G. F. Moore had elected to race the imported horse in the Dominion.

Tatton Park appears to be better suited by H. McSweenev’s vigorous style of riding than by the more gentle handling of his old pilot. A. McDonald, and. as at Marton, Tatton Park and Ringi had the steeplechase at Wanganui to themselves. Prince Paul might have gained a place if he had jumped all his fences alike, hut Tatton Park appeared tn win with something In band, and he should show un again next Wednesday at the Manawatu Hunt meeting. Whipcord was again disappointing on Thursday, and War Loan lacked condition ;to get the distance.

Lady Nassau’s continued failures must be nret.tr costly tn her owner. Mr. "Son” Smith. The mare had been showing great, form on the Wanganui tracks, but possibly she cannot be induced to do her best at this time of the W. H. McLachlan has been riding with some success in England, but the climate does not suit him. and probably he will shortly return to Australia. Gray is still winning races all over the country, and the sporting writers are at last giving him due credit for his suc-
