MILITARY DANCE.

A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. An animated scene was presented in the Coronation Hall, New Plymouth, last night, when a military cabaret dance, organised by the territorials and senior cadets, was held, the proceeds being in aid of the funds of the newlyformed Community Club. The large hall had been attractively decorated, the ribbons strung across from wall to wall making a novel cojjweb effect. The decorations were studded with red, white and blue electric bulbs which added a bright and sparkling touch to the whole decorative scheme. There were a large number present, masks being worn in the early part of the evening, but being soon discarded. Showers of confetti, which were sprinkled on the dancers, lent a carnival air to the function, whilst the military element was provided in the crossed rifles and bayonets arranged along the walls and in the khaki uniforms of the committee. The Battalion Band played the dance music for the first couple of hours, after which Mrs. George’s splendid jazz orchestra took charge, the music being dispensed from a raised dais in the centre of the floor. The committee consisted of the following: Sergeant W. Brown (chairman), Lieut. C. Stephenson (secretary), Corporal D. Doile (treasurer), Lieut. J. Robinson, Sergeant-Majors Stephens, Lister and Knight, Privates Corkill, Neivell, Wright, White, Johnson, Dodunski (2,). Rowlands. Pollock, Priest, Lash, Stephenson, Stagpoole, Thomson, Richards and Hughes. Sergeant-Major Knight officiated as M.C.

The strains of the bugle sounding “Come to the cook-house door” summoned the dancers to supper, which was held upstairs,, the supper-room being decorated in jazz style. The ladies of the Community Club were in charge of the supper. Ladies* and gentlemen’s cloak-rooms were provided, whilst a soft drinks stall at the end of the hall did good business. The door takings for the function approximated £46 10s, whilst the total proceeds were well over £5O. There are several small liabilP ties to meet, after which the takings will be handed over to the Community Club funds.
