WANGANUI MEETING. FIRST DAY’S RESULTS. ADMIRAL CODRINGTON WINS BIG RACE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wanganui, Last Night. The Wanganui Jockey Club spring meeting commenced to-day in cosd weather and light showers. The attendance was only fair. The totalisator handled £25,894, against £33,408 on the first day last year. Results: — PUTIKI HACK.—Bonibrook (H. Ryder) 1, ’"jml'ctL; Santiago 3. Also started: Mark Time, Urgency, Flying Nell, Comical, A'll Cerise, Gold Star, Pleasure, Birkenella, Admira.u;i, alerrj Ann, Toa here. Mark time won by a length, but failed to draw the weight, i Time, Imin. 51 2-ssec. MAIDEN HANDICAP.—BIush (H. Wiggins) | 1. Pillage 2, Halgina 3. Also started: Tivoli, 1 Lugano, Rada, Fleeting. Martian Miss. Won by half a length, four lengths between second and third. Time, Imin. • 15sec. NOTES ON THE RACING. (By Wire—Special to News.) Wanganui, Last Night. In the Putiki Hack Handicap the field left together, Bonibrook going across to the rails and leading round the bend from All Cerise and Mark Time. Along the back All Cerise was lying just behind Bonibrook, with Mark Time. Flying Nell and Comical together. Bonibrook showed the way to the home turn, with Mark Time. Comical and Vindictive following. Mark Time challenged the leader, and catching him at the distance, went on to win by a length, Bonibrook being three lengths in front of Vindictive. Santiago, All Cerise and Comical were the next to pass the post. Mark Time failed to draw the weight, being half a pound short, and was disqualified, Bonibrook being placed first and Vindictive second. In the Maiden, Pillage, Vogue, Halgina and Beilina was the order out frown the barrier, but when they had settled down Halgina was out making the pace, and he showed the way for home to Pillage. Vogue and Blush. At the distance Blush, Pillage and Halgina were on terms, but Blush finished best to beat Pillage by a. length, with Halgina a similar distance away. Vogue was fourth, and Fleetand Beilina were at the head of the There were nine runners in ths Okehu Hurdles. The order the first time up the straight was Mill o’ Gowrie, Otauru Kid, Whizz Bang, Matatua and Spook, with Explorer and Polthogue lying last. Along the back Spook made a move, lying handy to Otauru Kid and Whizz Bang, Mill o’ Gowrie dropping back ns they came to the half mile post. At three furlongs Otauru Kid commenced to draw away, and took the last fence a couple of lengths ahead of Whizz Bang, Spook and Matatua following. Otauru Kid went on to win nicely by two and a half lengths from Whizz Bang. Spook was third a length and a half away, just in front of Matatua. Mill o’ Gowrie was some lengths away at the head of the others. Royal Exchange lost his rider at • the first jump and Explorer fell at the fourth I fence. In the Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase Prince Paul was the early leader, the order ' the first time past the stands being Prince , Paul, Ringl. Sweet Flower, Simon, Tatton ■ Park and Whipcord, with War Loan last. ! Along the back stretch Tatton Park had [ command, and he led into the straight, followed by Prince Pau! and Ring!, with WliipI cord lying fourth. Tatton Park retained the ! load and easily heat Ring! by eight lengths. : The Baronet was throe lengths away third. I There was a big gap between the third horse ! and Sweet Flower and Whipcord, who were ; the next to finish. Projector baulked at the : “hen-coop” the first time round. ' Vlyella and Halgina were scratched in the ; Guineas, leaving five runners. They were let 1 go in a line, the order out of the straight j being Zouave, Enthusiasm, Triermain, Highland and Rapine. Rapine moved up into third place at the six furlongs, and the order as they raced along the back was Zouave, Eni thuslasm. Rapine, Trienmair and Highland, this ordef being unchanged crossing the top. ' As they came round the final turn Zouave was i still in front of Enthusiasm and Rapine, with Highland and Triermain coming round the field. Once in the straight Highland was ■ quickly in the lead, and although challenged at the distance by Rapine, held his own comfortably to beat Rapine by a clear length. Triermain was third half a length away, just in front of Zouave and Enthusiasm. The winner j is a big chestnut gelding capable of a lot of improvement yet, and a typical Derby horse. In the Durie Hack. Danger Zone and UleaI borg were slow to move when the barrier ! rose, Zany hopping out. well to lead along I the back froun Creme de Menthe, Wake UP • and Cochineal. Wake Up took charge after i parsing the half mile and had a good break I from Cochineal, Danger Zone and Yolande as ; they turned for the run to the judge. At
i the distance Wake Up compounded when Coch- ! ineal caught her. and the latter went on to win by throe lengths. Uleaborg was two lengths further off. and then came Militaire, Danger Zone and Yolande. There were a dozen starters in the Spring Handicap. A’hen they were let go Kinsem was first to show out on the rails, but when they had settled down the order was Haurangi. Cold Steel. Prosperity, Admiral Cod- ; rington and Trespass. At the home turn and once in the straight Admiral Codrington caught up with Haurangi, and in a good finish beat him by a length. Trespass was a half length away third, and then came Equitable, Tame Fox, Gasbag, Stork and Cold Steel. In the Flying Handicap Lucius was the first to find his feet. Rational, Thespian and Clvilfonm following close. At the half mile Rational went into the lead and showed the way to the straight from Lucius and Wrangle. Rational and Wrangle sorted themselves out at the distance. Rational gaining the j verdict by half a length. Thespian and Lucius , ran a dead heat for third place four lengths away, and Martian Miss and Irapuka were the next to pass the post. THE ST. LEGER. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copvright. London.
