LANDOWNERS’ DEFECTS.
“IGNORANT AND DESPOTIC.” By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Sept. 11. Lord Bledieloe. president of the agricultural section of the Brit L-h Association, dealing with the proper position of the land owner in relation to agriculture, said the lai;d owners’ ignorance and incapacity would lead to nationalisation of land. Many land owners in the last two generations had been mere rent receivers. possessing neither the knowledge or inclination to administer, still less to cultivate, their estates. They had been organised, not as producers of wealth, but defenders of property, and had thus lost political power, because they had no economic basis. Land owners had rendered great service as statesmen and local administrators, but. not wholly without justification, had been stigmatised as ignorant, reactionary and despotic. Nevertheless, during the period of their power and influence, Britain had attained an outstanding position. He advocated eliminating the superfluous middleman as a mean- of furthering agricultural progress.
