In the case of 73 petitions signed bj 80.551 persons praying that the business of a bookmaker be legalised an< bookmakers licensed, the Petitions Com mittee reported to the House to-daj that they had no recommendation t< make. Mr. G. Witty (Riccarton). Mr. M. J Savage (Auckland West) and Mr. W. E? Parry (Auckland Central) protested against this decision on the ground that it was not supported by any reasons. The latter two suggested that a referendum should be taken on the subject. Mr. J. Dickson (Chalmers), chairman of the committee, said the recommendation of the committee meant that the committee was against the prayer of petitions, and in that decision they were practically Unanimous.
