THE RUGBY GAME. AUCKLAND MATCH OFF. Owing to the difficulty In getting together a representative team to play Auckland at Auckland on Saturday, the Taranaki Rugby Union decided to ask the Auckland Rugby Union if they were agreeable to cancel the match and play the game instead early next season. A “wire” was received from the northern union yesterday, stating that under the circumstances they were agreeable to the cancellation of next Saturday’s match. This means that the Taranaki representatives will not be seen in action again this season. OLD BOYS v. HIGH SCHOOL. MATCH ON SATURDAY. What promises to be an interesting match is to be played at Pukekura Park on Saturday, when the Old Boys’ senior team will play the' High School first fifteen. Both teams headed their respective grades in the competitions this season. Added to this is the fact that both fifteens invariably play an open, fast game and some good work, especially among the backs, may be expected. The proceeds of the match are in aid of the High School gymnasium fund. A curtain-raiser will be played between the fourth grade teams of the High School and Old Boys’ Club. TARANAKI RUGBY UNION. MEETING OF MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE. The Management Committee of the Taranaki Rugby tlnlon met at Stratford on Monday evening, there being present: Messrs. Jas. McLeod (chairman), A. F. Neilson, F. Mason, L. G. Beamish, R. T. Harkness, A. J. Papps, A. Guy, and G. E. Jago (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. W. H. Moyes and J. Garcia. A formal resolution was carried requesting the New Zealand Rugby Union to take up £5OO Stratford Borough Council debentures, the loctfk union agreeing to indemnify the New Zealand Union in regard to the principal and interest. A condition of the loan by the union to the borough council is that the ground upon which it is to be Spent shall be available whenever either Taranaki or the New Zealand Union requires the use of it for football purposes, on no less advantageous terms than those charged to other bodies, and in any case at a rate not exceeding 15 per cent, of the gate takings. It is understood the borough council on Monday evening accepted the terms upon whl?h the debentures were to be taken up. An acknowledgment was received from the Commandant of the Salvation Army in New Plymouth of the receipt of a donation of £IS for Salvation Army local relief work, from the Rugby Union. Commandant Middlemiss wrote: “We appreciate your kind thought, and assure you this will be spent for the purpose for which it is given.’’ Permission was given for the use of the Sports Ground for the annual fixture between the High School and Old Boys’ Clubs, on Saturday, September 16. A charge for admission will be made on the same basis as club matches, and the funds devoted to the School Gymnasium Fund. * A donation of £2O was made to the New Plymouth High School Sports Fund. It was decided to try to arrange a return match between the North and South Taranaki primary schools, as a curtain-raiser to the High School-Nelson College match on Monday, September 25. The following letter from the proprietor of the Dominion Hotel, Christchurch, to the secretary of the Taranaki Rugby Union, is complimentary to the members of the Taranaki team who made the southern tour. Mr. Sutton wrote: “I have bben catering for athletic teams for nearly a score of ye&rs, and their conduct generally is now of such a high and uniform standard that it would seem almost superfluous to single out any one team for special mention. However, that one exception has been here in the team from your province, and this letter is a genuine appreciation of their conduct as sports and gentlemen.” When the letter was read the chairman (Mr. Jas. McLeod), who had accompanied the team, said the behaviour of the men was the best be had ever seen in connection with a touring fifteen, and this was confirmed by Mr. A. Guy.
