PROHIBITION CAMPAIGN.
“PUSSYFOOT” BEGINS WORK. MEETING AT WELLINGTON. By Telepranh.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A prohibition meeting was held tonight to welcome Mr. “Pussyfoot” Johnson and farewell the Rev. Hammond. The Mayor presided over a crowded audience, and there were a number of members of Parliament on the platform. The speakers received loud applause and cheers. Mr. Johnson told how America had tried prohibition in town, country and State for over fifty years. Then, when 12.000 towns had carried it in 32 States the people decided to make it nation wide. The constitution required the law to he carried by a two-thirds vote of the Federal Legislature and by a threefourths vote of the State Legislatures. Actually it was cararied by an 85 per cent, vote of the Federal Legislature and by 45 States out of 48. He quoted opinions of State Governors in favour •of prohibition, and declared it had come to stay. ARRIVAL OF “PUSSYFOOT.” Wellington. Sept. 11. Mr. Pussyfoot Johnson arrived from Sydney by the Maunganui and was met at the wharf by the leaders of the prohibition movement. He had a warm welcome and was entertained at dinner by leading men. He gives his first speech in the Town Hall to-night.
