TAX ON GLUTTONS.
PENALTY FOR OVER-EATING. PROCEEDS TO HELP POOR. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.— Copyright. Received Sept. 8, 1.5 am. London. September 6. The Daily Mail’s Berlin correspondent reports that the Prussian Government has decided to levy a tax on gluttons, the proceeds to provide food for the poor. The tax will ran ire from fortv to a hundred per cent., according to the degree of gluttony, and will be paid on anything above a certain sum spent on food and drink in cafes, restanrants and bars. It is left to the local authorities to decide how much shall be paid before a man can be accused of the deadlv sin. end in this connection many difficulties are likely. Prices vary in restaurants, and the general opinion is that the tax will have to be dropped. But the real gluttons are alreadv planning to eat each course in a different restaurant —United Service.
