TURF TOPICS. > (By "Moturoa.”) The Marton Jockey Club’s spring meeting, which takes place to-morrow (Saturday) promises to be a great success. Splendid fields are carded in all events, and the course (as seen by the writer on Thursday) is in perfect order. A large number of outside trainers have already put in an appearance, amongst the number being G. Jones, with four horses, P. Hazleman (five), W. Hawthorne (four), R. O’Donnell (with the Duncan team), and F. Bassett (one). A big crowd of Taranaki horses are booked to arrive to-day. The secretary, Mr. Arthur Way. has all arrangements complete, and the club is looking forward to a first-class meeting. Mr. J. B. Gaisford’s team for Marton numbers six, but of these two, Mattock and Celmisla, appear to be very sore. J. O’Shea is mentioned as the likely pilot of Admiral Codrington in the Marton HandiWhipcord has been doing well since his arrival, and Raffle looks none the worse for her Taranaki trip. Demos, having broken down, had to forego Marton engagements. The horse has been turned out. At present Admiral Codrington is a papular fancy for the Marton Handicap. The Hawke’s Bay horse is reported to <be very fit. He won the race last year, when first favorite. Golden VI, with a big weight up, ran five furlongs in Imin. ssec. at Marton yesterday, and is likely to run well in the Maiden. Since writing the above Mr. Gaisford informs the writer that Celmisia was scratched for the sprint event at 10.40 a.m. on Thursday.
