MOASCAR CUP FINAL. WON BY AUCKLAND GRAMMAR. A POOR DISPLAY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The final of the Moascar Cup competitions for the secondary schools’ championship of New Zealand was played’ at Lancaster Park to-day between. Auckland Grammar School, last year’s runners-up, and Southland Boys’ High School, who heat the holders (Christchurch Boys’ High School) last week for the honor of representing the South Island in the final. There was an attendance of about 4000 spectators. The ground conditions were Ideal, though a strong snm hampered those who were playing against it to some extent. Auckland won by 16 points to 9. The game was an extremely disappointing one, and much below the standard of Moascar Cup football. Though Auckland won, they thoroughly deserved to lose, so many were the opportunities they threw away and so weak was the display of their backs, in the first half particularly. Their forwards held the upper hand and fed the backs religiously, only to see the wildest of passing and the weakest of handling. Southland, in the first spell, were handicapped by the fact that their forwards were being beaten for the ball, but their backs, too, were lacking in combination. In the second half the game became much more Interesting, hut not much improvement in the standard of play was shown. Southland forwards improved noticeably, and their backs worked together much better, but it was not until the last quarter that Auckland came to light. They rattled on three tries, one of which was converted. McLaren scored three tries for Auckland and Colgan one, two being converted by Ewen. Harrington scored for Southland. Morgan converting, an'’ Kilby potted a goal from the field. After the match the cup was presented by Major H. Hurst. INTER-’VARSITY MATCH. OTAGO DEFEAT SYDNEY. Dunedin, Last Night. A match between- Otago and Sydney Universities was played to-day in beautiful weather and before an attendance of 8000 persons. The game resulted in a hollow win for Otago by 35 points to 9. The Otago backs in the second spell dominated the play, and the game was one of the most spectacular exhibitions of passing ever seen on the Carisbrook ground. In the first half play did not reach a particularly high standard, opportunities being missed by both sides by faulty handling of the backs. The spell ended 10 to 6 In favour of Otago. By a strange coincidence 10 points to nil was the score of the Otago team when they last met Sydney, a match which was finally won by the visitors by 45 to 10. On the present occasion, however, the positions were reversed, and in the second spell Otago added 2S points, while the visitors only added one unconverted try. The scorers for Otago were Mackereth (2). Perry (2). Dickson (2), Cabot. Stewart and Harty (one each), and four tries were converted by Kingston. Tries were obtained for the visitors by Woodhead, Taylor and Foote, nond being converted. WANGANUI BEAT NELSON. Nelson, Last Night. Wanganui defeated Nelson by 13 points tn 8. two converted tries and a penalty goal to a converted try and a penalty goal. There was a large attendance and splendid weather. The Wanganui hacks gave a fine exhibition, and Wanganui led by eight points at the end of the first spell. The second half was very strenuous. The Wanganui backs gave a fine display. THE LEAGUE GAME SOUTH AUCKLAND v. WELLINGTON. Palmerston N., Last Night. South Auckland (holders of the Northern Un’on Cup) met and defeated a Wellington representative team to-day before a poor attendance of about 560. Tn the first spell Balks (Wellington full-back) kicked three goals, one from half-wav. and thus scored the whole of the six points obtained by his side throughout the game. Guthrie, on the Auckland wing, scored an unconverted try, and the spell ended with the scores: Wellington 6, South Auckland 3. In the second spell Auckland “went at it” with the wind on their sails, and pressed all the time. B. Paki. on the wing, scored four trk>s. and the full-back, Sherlock, also scored.' Rtaynor, T. Peckham and W. Hall converted bne each. The Auckland Rugby team, which is at , present in Wellington, has not been doing too well on tour, and the other day received the following telegram from “Admirer” in Auckland : "Is your team prepared to play Veterans' Home as curtain-raiser to Chinese market gardeners versus Freeman’s Bay on your return?”
