TRADE WITH ARGENTINE.
DOMINION’S OPPORTUNITY. - FRESH FRUIT AND MACHINERY. The possibility of the extension of trade relations between New Zealand and Argentina is dealt with in a letter received by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce from the Department of Industries and Commerce, Wellington. The departpient also forwarded a letter from the commercial secretary to the British League at Buenos Aires, giving details as to the customs duties levied in that country on fresh fruit, stud sheep and cattle, milking machines, dairy machinery and oil engines. The letter stated that the first three items mentioned were duty free, while dairy machinery generally was subject to a duty of 5 per cent, ad valorem. It was further stated that at the last exhibition of the Sociedad Rural Argentina, dairy machinery held a prominent place, and there was no doubt there would be an increase in the demand for dairy machinery in the Republic. At the exhibition mentioned, the larger portion of dairy exhibits were of German and Swedish make. A New Zealand milking-machine company also exhibited, through its Argentine agent, and took first prize.
“In view of the recent reinstatement of regular sailings of cargo steamers to England, via Cape Horn,” states the letter from the Department of Industries and Commerce, “the opportunity for supplying South American markets with various commodities is again open to New Zealand producers.”
