LADIES’ TOURNAMENT, POVERTY BAY BEATS WELLINGTON. By Telegraph.—Press Association. 1 Napier, Last Night. The New Zealand ladies' championship hockey tournament was concluded at Napier on Saturday in glorious weather and before an attendance of about 2000. The grounds were perfect, but playing conditions were slightly on the warm side. The match was between the sections winners, Poverty Bay and Wellington, who were, incidentally, the equal champions last year. Play was very fast and open, but the exhibition was not as good as other matches witnessed during - the tournament. A feature of the game was the combination of the Poverty Bay forward line, their many attacks proving most dangerous. The score would undoubtedly have been much greater but for the fine defensive work of Miss Nash (Wellington’s right back). She repeatedly broke up the excellent Combination of Misses Hill and Hei, who played brilliant games. Poverty Bay were very nippy throughout, taking great advantage of the slowness of the Wellington playing in clearing. Poverty Bay were leading at half-time by 2 goals to nil, and the final score was: Poverty Bay 6 goals, Wellington nil. Five of the goals were scored by Miss Hill and the other by Miss Golding. THE MEN’S SHIELD. MANAWATU BEAT AUCKLAND. Palmerston N., Last fyight. A match for the New Zealand! shield was played at Palmerston North on Saturday between Auckland (holders) and Manawatu. The weather conditions were ideal, and the ground fast. There was little to choose between the teams. Auckland showed better all round combination, hut lost opportunities for equalising the score. Auckland were strong In defence and attack, but their efforts were nullified by the formidable defen/e of Manawatu, Herrin, Hansen and Bramwell being particularly prominent. The first spell was keenly contested. Towards the end Manawatu secured the ball, good passing resulting in Knowles (left wing) netting. The whistle blew with the score: Manawatu 1. Auckland 0. On resuming the ball travelled rapidly up and down field, each side attacking in turn. Manawatu’s second score was the outcome of a fine centre by Anderson (right wing), Bostick putting in a hot shot which gave the goalie no chance. The reverse spurred the blues, and for some time play remained in the Manawatu half. Several times Auckland nearly scored, but the opportunities were lost, and the game ended in Manawatu’s favour by 2 goals to nil.
