officers and regretting the action ot the town clerk and the deputy-town clerk iri connection with the paint contract passed in 1913 without tne sanction of thp council. The foreman painter is recommended for suspension. The firm of 11. A. Taylor, with which Lady Taylor (ex-lady Mayoress) is connected, is debarred from tendering for any further paint supplies for the council. MR. HUGHES’ SEAT. Melbourne. Sept. 1. Mr. Hughes declines definitely to state whether he is leaving Bendigo, but explained that if the area was increased under the redistribution scheme he might seek a national stronghold with the object-of freeing himself from his own electorate for party services, The Daily Telegraph correspondent suggests that, owing to the altered character of Bendigo, Mr. Hughes is displaying timidity. Another obstacle in the path is the fact that Mr. Archdale, the secretary of the Parkhill Association, has been nursing the new seat for several months and shows no signs of withdrawing.
