INGLEWOOD.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The euchre party'and dance in the Town Hall on Thursday evening in aid of the soldiers’ memorial fund was not so well attended as anticipated, and a small surplus only was secured to swell the credit in hand. Nevertheless, those who were there had a most enjoyable time. The euchre competition was presided over by Mrs. Evans. Owing to a shortage of men players some of the ladies competed for the gentlemen’s prizes, the first of which was secured by Miss Lile, while her mother, Mrs. W. J. Lile,. secured the first ladies’ prize. As each prize consisted of a quarter of a ton of coal, they made together a substantial asset from a householder’s point of view. The second ladies’ prize, a gold brooch, was won by Mrs. Lamb, and a fourth lady (Mrs. Gyde) secured the second gentlemen’s prize, a razor strop and shaving soap. The prizes were all donations, the ladies being given by Mr. and Mrs. Capon (of the Inglewood Hotel), the first gentlemen’s by Mr. P. G. Nops, and the second by Mr. McGonagle. It is worthy of note that though comparatively a small number joined in the card contest, all agreed that the play was more enjoyable than usual. The dancing was under the charge of Messrs. W. H. Eagar and K. Lawson, M.C.’s, to music supplied by Mr. Murfitt, who so well acquitted themselves in their various duties that it was full 1 o’clock on Friday morning before any move was made for homes. A most delicious slipper was provided by the ladies of Inglewood, who appreciate the object for which these gatherings have been organised, and to whom the committee wish to express their hearty thanks. The next function in the series is fixed for September 14, when all will find a hearty welcome.
