DISTRICT NEWS.
DOUGLAS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A very successful bazaar in aid of the local school and tennis funds was held in the Douglas Hall on Friday, August 25, and resulted in a very fair sum of money being collected. During the evening a waltzing competition was held, the winners being Mr. R. McMullian and his partner (Miss Wilmshurst). Various guessing competitions were won by the following: Miss A. Reid. Miss Westrup, Mr. Wiker, and little Monica Harding. The factory manager’s new residence is now in course of erection, and should be completed in about a month’s time. The supply at the factory is at the present time far in excess of what has been received at this time of the season since the factory was erected, and the price to be paid for August and September supplies will do much to alleviate the stringency of the money unarket locally. Mr. W. Rumball, of New Plymouth, is now a resident here, having purchased the property formally occupied by Mr. A. F. Wilson, who has gone to reside in New Plymouth. Mr. Arthur Needham, who was a resident hero until some two years ago, and has since been farming at Pukekohe, Auckland district, is spending a few days here, and on Sunday evening conducted a service in the local church.
A movement is op foot to again have a Methodist Home missioner stationed here. The station has been unoccupied since, the removal of Mr. Witheford, about eighteen months ago. CARDIFF. SCHOOL CHILDREN'S FANCY DRESS DANCE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) One of the most successful functions ever held, in Cardiff was the children’s fancy dress dance last Friday evening. The schoolroom, which was packed to overflowing, was beautifully decorated with greenery, Chinese lanterns, and colored streamers, arranged In a most effective style. Between the dances there were several items given by the children, a ribbon dance by Infants being very well executed. About sixty children took part In the "grand march.” which consisted of many interesting figures. The following were the prize winners:— Girls: Clytie Remnant (Hawaiian Girl) 1, Una Mills (Dorothy Bag) 2. Boys: Terence Boyle (Moorish Attendant) 1, Wallace Brunton (Father Christmas) 2. Most original costume, Ernie Bennett (Continuance).
