WAITARA.
(Fl'om Our Own Correspondent.) August 31. The death ocourrod on Monday of M>«, Cleave, relict of the late Mr. W. I. Cleave, in her 79th year. The deceased lady, who came from England with her husband, had resided in the district since 1882, and after retirement from farming they took up their abode in Waitara. Her husband pre-de-ceased her 14 years ago. Mrs. Cleave was a staunch supporter of church matters. She assisted a good many good causes, and was an earnest worker during the war period. During. the last twelve months her health was such as to give her friends cause for anxiety. She is survived by a sister and brother in England, and a brother (Mr. P. Vosper) in Waitara. Ratana, the famous Maori faith-healer, arrived in Waitara on Monday afternoon with about 40 of his people, and proceeded to the Manakorihi pa, where • the local native gave the party a welcome. On Tuesday and Wednesday his visit was characterised by religious services and political speeches. It seems his visit was principally political, as he has a son who seeks Parliamentary honors, being ambitious to displace Sir M. Pomare. The idea of standing to represent the race took root after their Kawhia visit. The Kawhia people twitted Sir M. Pomare for having accepted a title, whilst ihe Maori leaders of the tribes around Waitara congratulated him. Sir M. Pomare’s trump-card is that the title is held by him on behalf of the native race, and is a sign of the King's pleasure at the bravery displayed by the Maori soldiers on the field of battle.
Miss Kathleen Faull was the" winner of the prize given by Mrs. and Miss Marlow for the candidate gaining the highest number of marks in the recent theory examination of the Associasted Board of the Royal Academy and Royal College of Music.
The Surf-bathing and Seaside Society are subsidising £l5 of the “Poppy Day” fund by a similar amount for improvements to their resort.
