Richards’ cross-court placing shots, however proved so effective that the Australians only secured one game. In the next set the games went alternately to each side up to the sixth. Tilden’s speed and accuracy then accounted for two more, and Wood, appearing to tire, the Americans took the last game and set. 11l the fourth set tag Americans appeared tc completely outplay their opponents. Patterson became wild and erratic and Wood tircc as no rest period had been agreed upon between the third and fourth sets, the Australians being anxious to catch the early train in preparation for the Davis Cup.
